Digital Community Ethnography Reflection

This piece was perhaps one of the most challenging to start. Once started, it didn't seem very difficult and was rather relatively more enjoyable than the some of the previous writing pieces. What made this piece the difficult to start was how broad and the same time, how dauntingly narrow the piece could be. I wanted to choose a topic that I can closely relate to, a topic that I can enjoy talking about and research. I ventured perhaps into risky territory by choosing an explicit non-digital (online) community to research contrary to the assignment requirements. Though this is true, it is only partially true, the community that I choose to analyze, happens to not significantly dissimilar or happens to be the same in an digital and physical context.

Gathering the evidence I needed for my research was straightforward and simple. The community I choose happens to be one I closely associate and participate with. Personal experiences both in a digital and physical context allows me to provide several key points as evidence to further the analysis of this community. Thinking back to past experience was enjoyable in a way because it allows me to recall situation with different perspectives and "framing lens" as per what was taught in class. All the research was grounded on past experiences and even during the course of this semester, I was luckily provided with further data during certain engineering classes. There were class discussions regarding the nature of the field and what makes it stand out or what attributes comprises the members of this community.

I mentioned experiences in the workplace, in interpersonal situations, and in online communities. I feel that introducing a question or "gap" that raises thoughts on an issue as well as outlining the dynamism of communication in these communities would deliver an effective piece. That is exactly what I did, I presented a gap present in the community and closed with a very well defined dynamism in this community.
